Why I hate D grade

At the recent Kew Boulevard TT for the first time I rode D grade. This happened after winning the previous E grade TT. The reason I didn’t want to move to D grade isn’t the fact that I am now racing grown ups nor the fact that I am now unlikely to pocket $20 from the race. What sends shivers down my neck is the fact that instead of doing one lap of the hell like Kew circuit I have to do two.
The Kew Boulevard is without a doubt one of the hardest places you will ever race on. The 10km circuit is undulating and is either up or down the whole way. The most challenging part of the course occurs within the first two k’s where you are presented with a 800m drag. While it isn’t very long nor very steep it is very easy to go to hard here and explode or to go to slowly and lose heaps of time. After getting over this hill you are mainly faced with little undulations where you need to dig deep to keep the momentum going.
From my experience when I did the second lap the most important thing to do is to make sure you measure your effort on the first lap. This means that your second lap should be roughly as quick as the first lap. With this in mind when you climb the drag you need to assess how the legs are feeling and if you realize that they are dead back off there and save some energy for the way back.
To give you an idea of times from the races during the one lap I did 20:27. When doing two laps I did the first lap in 21:45 and the last one in 21:15.
This was what I observed from my experience of doing two laps. The next and last Kew Boulevard TT is on the 12th of September. I hope to see you there, if anybody else has any advice on riding the two laps or just one I would love for you to share it.
James
