After a disappointing performance in the Eildon Junior Tour I had a big think about training and racing. After the race I was very disappointed about my results and I was shocked about how hard road racing actually is . However, after thinking and reflecting for a couple of days I decided that to improve and enjoy racing/riding more I needed to train more. I train with my Garmin all the time and I have noticed that my base fitness has seriously decreased and so to address that I needed to really rethink my training and by that I mean to actually train. My weekly km’s over the past 6 months on average would be around the 70 km count, with all of this coming from Sunday rides.
To fix this issue I decided to start riding to school. To be honest for the past couple of months I had been thinking to myself that I should but being the wimp I am I always avoided riding to school. Eildon though kicked me into realising that I really do need to do more training and riding to school is the best way to get miles into the legs. The ride to school is actually quite a good ride covering 12.5 km’s albeit on mostly flat roads. While it isn’t the most strenuous ride Indurain always said any miles are good miles.
So on Tuesday Morning I set out to school at 7:30 for the 12.5 km commute to Brighton. I would love to go on about how it was the most amazing, wonderful ride however in the end it was just a half an hour commute. While in the end the ride wasn’t that exciting it was a great use of time and in the end it took the exact same time as if I went in the car if not less. This week I will have done 50km in riding for school and I can’t wait for the benefits all the extra riding will bring unfortunately I have to wait for that to happen though. So next time when you get the car/public transport to school just consider that you could use that time to get some good training in.
