Vive le Giro!
Have you ever seen more exciting flat stages than at this years Giro? The first two weeks of the Giro have been some of the most exciting and most gripping stages I have ever seen. I think though that the Giro has had the gods playing around with the riders. The treacherous weather has been a huge object over the tour. Tight roads and fast bunch sprints get nasty when it is wet. You have to admire the fact that Angelo Zomegnan took risks with the first weekend in Amsterdam. Roads wreaked havoc on the stages with many taking a spill as a consequence. Carlos Sastre and Bradley Wiggins where out of contention after the first week.
Last nights stage was one of the most amazing stages in a Grand Tour ever. A huge break with over 60 riders formed at the front; in that break was Sastre and Wiggins. In the down pouring conditions Evans and Vino lost about 12 min. The one positive for Aussies though is the fact the RICHE PORTE is now in the pink Jersey. To give you an idea of the stage read what Cadel said:
| Wet cold and very long day here. 269km on the bike is…pretty tough on your rear end.
As a first, well since I have been racing as a professional, the race leader let an enormous group of 56 riders go. You never thought you would see all of the GC favourites swapping off together in a race? We did it for 50km today, and they still took 12 minutes…
Each day of this year’s Giro, my definition of ‘normal’ was broadening, I don’t think it is worth using the word anymore at…. Cadel Evans |
